If this thing wasn’t site specific we could be going places was made while on residency at ARCUS, in Moriya, Japan. In the work a vehicle was constructed from scrap parts as both object and proposition, playing on the language of site-specificity and mobility. Situated within the landscape, the car appears simultaneously functional and stranded, turning the possibility of movement into a condition of immobility. The title also points to the economic problem of site-specific practice: a work bound to a particular place is difficult to circulate, sell or convert into career value. “Going places” therefore refers both to literal movement and to the promise of artistic mobility, success and financial return.
